Live Longer, Age Gracefully, Enjoy

a Greater Quality of Life.

Breath Energy Work describes a set of Qigong exercises forming an integral component of Chinese medicine.  While the techniques are ancient, the application is thoroughly modern in the sense that the exercises are organized in a manner to be practically applicable to a modern schedule.  Starting with simple hand exercises the book progresses through warm-ups to the Qigong exercises that form the core of the subject matter, including my favorite name for an exercise, "Crane shows intent".  It has been my pleasure to be a student of Michael Holland and in reading his book I was pleased to observe that much of the wit and warmth that characterize his teaching come through.  The photographs give exactly enough detail to be able to follow along with the exercises and are interspersed with shots the author has taken in China.  I cannot recommend the book enough.

The Benefits

How would you like to: Reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure? Increase joint flexibility and deep muscle relaxation? Boost your immune system against shingles and possibly other viruses? Scientific studies have shown Taiji and Qigong to be effective in all of these areas.

Additional scientific studies have found that regular Taiji and Qigong practice:

  • May slow the loss of cardio-respiratory function due to aging.
  • Is a social activity that encourages people of all ages to exercise because it is genuinely enjoyable.
  • Is a very efficient (and therefore very effective) aerobic exercise.
  • Exercises the cardiovascular system, increasing the heart rate moderately.
  • Improves reflexes, uniting mind and body: 1. Fine-tuning muscles; 2. Stimulating right-left brain coordination; 3. Developing eye-hand coordination.
  • Reduces stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of well-being.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control concludes that the leading cause of injury death for senior citizens is FALLING. In scientific studies conducted by well-known universities, such as Emory University in Atlanta, Taiji and Qigong practice has been proven to reduce the risk of falling.

And low-impact, weight-bearing exercise is recommended by many doctors to improve bone density. Taiji and Qigong are low-impact, weight-bearing exercises.
